A + O

Advanced Architecture Studio, Spring 2023

Ambiguous + Occupiable is a proposal for a new mixed-use space in the vibrant Wynwood neighborhood in Miami, Florida. The area is renowned for its murals, and all new developments are mandated to reserve a percentage of exterior surface for the purpose of art. This elective studio challenged us to provide blank canvas for murals, but also dared students to be as provocative and as imaginative as possible. How could the architecture itself respond to the context of the neighborhood?

A + O suggests that the general form of the structure could be art itself. The shape was conceived by merging two tessellations and determining which masses to keep and which to discard. The resulting silhouette was broken down into smaller components, each of which further abstracted through unique facades comprised of multiple layers of wooden patterns. These patterns create fenestration and shading, while also giving each area its own identity - useful for way-finding purposes.
